1. Why should I partner with
ScaleVP?
We will use our years of experience in scaling a business
to help you grow and succeed, as we have with previous entrepreneurs.
Choosing a VC is like choosing a member of your team. Entrepreneurs
should carefully assess the value-add of potential investors,
seeking VCs who know the company's technology and markets,
have built a track record of solid successes, and can provide
access to a network that will serve the company well through
its growth. VCs should also offer a similar operating philosophy
to management and be pragmatic and helpful while also respectful
that management runs the company on a daily basis. Your VC
should be an advocate for your company at all times and especially
while sitting in board meetings.
As a venture investor, Scale Venture Partners seeks out opportunities
to work with technology and healthcare companies who have the
drive and determination to be category leaders. Scale Venture
Partners adds value by helping to build management teams, to
identify optimal markets or business models, as well as to
assist with manufacturing, sales and distribution. Because
Scale Venture Partners understands regulatory and capital efficiency
considerations, Scale Venture Partners also is adept at organizing
clinical development strategies in healthcare.

2. In what types of companies
and market segments does Scale Venture Partners invest?
Scale Venture Partners invests in technology and healthcare
companies. Please see the Why ScaleVP/Strategy section of our
website for current focus areas.
We invest in companies looking for $5 - 15M from a lead investor.
These companies should already have some indications of future
market traction, i.e., a validated concept, some early customers
and/or early revenues.

3. What is the minimum amount
of money Scale Venture Partners will invest in a company?
Typically, the minimum amount of money Scale Venture Partners
invests is approximately $5M.

4. Do you have to lead an
investment?
We have led or co-led all our current investments. We will
help a company form a syndicate of quality investors if there
are no existing institutional investors.

5. Do you require a board
seat in order to invest?
Yes, normally we join the Board of our portfolio companies.
In addition to investing capital, every Managing Director at
Scale Venture Partners is an active and involved investor and
adds the most value to a company by investing time and attention
as a board member.

6. How does the Scale Venture
Partners team work with its portfolio companies?
Scale Venture Partners focuses on building category-leading
companies. We look for ways to help companies accelerate growth
so that they can become market leaders. We add value by building
management teams through our networks, identifying optimal
markets or business models and assisting with manufacturing,
sales and distribution. Because we know how to navigate regulatory
and capital efficiency considerations, we also add significant
value in organizing clinical development strategies in the
life sciences. In short, we not only provide companies with
capital for growth and expansion, but we help chart and navigate
the path to success.

7. Does more than one person
from Scale Venture Partners sit on the board in addition to
the Managing Director?
Typically, one person from Scale Venture Partners sits on
a board; although the entire Scale Venture Partners team is
available to help the CEO and management team maximize market
and growth opportunities.

8. Where does Scale Venture
Partners find the companies in which it invests?
We're seasoned investors who have remained active in the industries
where we earned our operational expertise. Often, our best
investments are companies we proactively contacted as part
of our market activity. The entire Scale Venture Partners team
is constantly in the market learning about and evaluating new
technologies and meeting with the people who are working to
bring them alive. We attend trade shows, speak at conferences,
and host events for our portfolio companies; all of which gives
us insight into today's evolving markets and many opportunities
to meet new entrepreneurs. Whether we are researching a new
investment opportunity or increasing our market intelligence
on behalf of a portfolio company, we are staying connected
to the industries we know and love.

9. What is the process of
setting up a meeting with Scale Venture Partners?
We are approachable people who strive to be responsive, even
while we’re active with our existing entrepreneurs. Each ScaleVP
investment professional has email contact info on his or her
bio page on this site. We tend to prefer email to voicemail,
and will want to review an executive summary or short presentation
to decide how to proceed.

10. How do you set valuation?
The valuation process is a bottoms-up modeling process that
varies by company, stage and market conditions. Among our criteria
in determining valuations, is the potential for an appropriate
return relative to the stage and risk of the investment.

11. How do I submit my business
plan?
Please review the backgrounds of the ScaleVP
team on this site, and then send a summary to the person
who seems the best match. If you are not sure whom to contact,
the upper left hand corner on the "Contact us" page of the
Scale Venture Partners website has a feature to submit your
business plan. Please do not submit plans by postal mail.
