BA Venture Partners has appointed biopharmaceuticals veteran Jeff Calcagno as a principal, the latest in spate of new hiring at the firm.

Calcagno joins the firm from his role at Vela Pharmaceuticals Inc., a venture-backed specialty pharmaceuticals company, where he served as chief business officer and chief financial officer.

Previously, Calcagno led strategy, corporate development and operations for San Diego-based Widcomm Inc., where he was responsible for raising $35 million in venture financing. Prior to that, he analyzed public health-care companies as a securities analyst at J.P. Morgan H&Q, an arm of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., and served as a management consultant for McKinsey & Co.

In August, BA Venture Partners added Chad Kinzelberg as its newest director and hired two new associates, Ben Fu, a former sales engineer, and Nancy Lynch, a former orthopedic hand surgeon.

The Foster City, Calif.-based firm is currently investing out of its $400 million seventh fund and backs mid-stage companies across various information technology and life sciences categories.
