Siimpel Corp., a maker of components used in cellphone cameras,
has raised $21.5 million in Series D investments ahead of its first
serious revenue year.
SunAmerica Ventures led the round and was joined by other first-time
backers Motorola, Qualcomm and Micron Technology. All of the company's
prior venture capital investors including Draper Fisher Jurvetson,
Scale Venture Partners, Global Catalyst Partners, Portage Venture
Partners and Zone Venture Partners participated in the round, according
to SunAmerica Partner Troy Fukumoto.
As a result of this funding, Fukumoto joined the company's board
of directors. The round was earlier reported by Socaltech.com.
The company has raised about $65 million to date, according to
Scale's board representative, Rob Herb.
Fukumoto declined to discuss financial specifics. Company Chief
Executive Tony Tang was traveling Monday and could not be reached
for comment.
Herb said the company needed the money to ramp up production.
He couldn't disclose customers' names, except to say they are some
of the largest handset manufacturers. He said Siimpel should be
profitable within the next two years.
The Arcadia, Calif.-based company's micro electronic mechanical
system-based optics technology enables camera modules on mobile
handsets. Siimpel was founded as Siwave in 2000 but changed its
name in early 2005.
