Neuroscience specialty pharmaceutical company Zogenix Inc. has added Stephen J. Peroutka as chief medical officer.

Most recently, Peroutka was the franchise development leader for pain at Johnson & Johnson. Previously he was chief medical officer at Collabra Pharma Inc. and vice president of clinical research at Deltagen Inc. He was also president and CEO of Synergia Pharma Inc. and established the department of Neuroscience at Genentech Inc. He also founded Spectra Biomedical Inc.

San Diego-based Zogenix, which launched in August 2006 with a $60 million Series A round, develops Intraject, a single-use subcutaneous delivery system that is both needle-free and disposable.
